Fiddle Camp

Learn tunes from Scotland, Ireland, Quebec and the Appalachian mountains during our fun filled week. Have you ever performed for goats and chickens? Or used a handmade “crankie”, a moving picture box with musical accompaniment? Lots of fun and laughter while students collaborate on new songs and even try new instruments.

Week 2: July 15 – 19

HOURS:  9am – 3pm
INSTRUMENTS:  Fiddle, cello, viola, ukulele, banjo and guitar
AGE GROUP:  Rising 4th through 9th graders
LEVELS:  Beginner intermediate – intermediate (some prior instruction is required)

Teacher Profile ~ Mia Friedman

Fiddle CampHartsbrook teacher MIA FRIEDMAN is a fiddler and singer as well as a composer and educator. Her song “Across the Water” won the 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the folk category, and she was the 2006 New Hampshire Highland Games Scottish Fiddle Champion. Mia has taught at many fiddle camps, such as Maine Fiddle Camp, FiddlePals, and Berkshire Summer Strings.

She is largely influenced by American roots music and old-time Appalachian traditions. Mia performs in Ari & Mia, a duo she has with her sister, Ariel Friedman. When Mia’s not home with her baby born this past October, she teaches at the Community Music School of Springfield and leads elementary and high school string programs in five public schools in Springfield, MA. She is the orchestra teacher at Hartsbrook. Mia graduated from New England Conservatory in 2012.

Teacher Profile ~ Annika Amstutz

Fiddle CampANNIKA AMSTUTZ is a musician and educator from Northampton, Massachusetts.  As the Musical Director of the Fiddle Orchestra of Western Massachusetts Annika leads members of all ages and musical abilities as they learn new music, develop their skills, and prepare for performances to share the joy of music with the greater community.  Annika teaches private lessons to students from age 5 to 75 and particularly enjoys working closely with young students and their families to help them learn about themselves as learners through their musical studies.  She can be seen performing with a variety of bands and musical groups across the valley and throughout New England and loves playing fiddle with other musicians wherever she goes.

Teacher Profile ~ Melanie Whitney

Fiddle Camp

For MELANIE WHITNEY music has always been a driving force in her life. She began conducting choirs as a high school student. Since then, she has maintained a private voice studio and has taught music in public and private school classrooms.  She has experience working with children, Pre-K to Grade 12,  as a choral director, voice specialist, general music teacher, and music theory instructor.

Melanie served as the Head of the Music Department, director of festivals, Grades 1-5 music teacher, and member of the Teacher Leadership Committee at a Waldorf-methods Charter School in Fogelsville, PA. She currently serves at the Music Director here at The Hartsbrook School. Contributing to an educational system she believes in is extremely important to her. Melanie is a constant seeker of knowledge and enjoys learning from her students and colleagues.
